AskGR: Is it time for a ROS replacement?

ROS is great in a lot of ways, but also has a very steep learning curve, limited and somewhat awkward support for microcontrollers, and constant backwards compatibility breaks preventing packages from "just working" on the latest releases. Do you have frustrations with ROS that can only be solved by a redesign? What would an ideal robotics middleware look like to you?
